"let me describe what I had to do in a recent Avid Media Composer 2.7 assignment to move two audio track segments from 3-4 to 5-6. Simple, right?"

Yes, actually! Just alt-C the segment to copy it into the source monitor, then overwrite it into the timeline on tracks 5 and 6. Not as elegant as a shift-drag, but it will do.

Thanks for the article - good overview, wish I'd had it a couple months ago. I'm still getting used to a few things in FCP - not being able to load sequences in the source monitor, the incredibly fiddly keyframe editing interface, and the lack of OMF import support are near the top - but other than that having a very good experience.

Doug, Scott, others chimingin, thanks for all the comments.

[Yes, actually! Just alt-C the segment to copy it i]

Very true! If I were discussing how to recut to segments from one track pair to another I would use the Clipboard Monitor. But simply *moving* is a different story!

[not being able to load sequences in the source monitor]

Load any sequence from the Browser into your Viewer.
- To cut it into another sequence as a Nest, simply F9 into timeline.
- To cut it into another sequence as discrete clips, Command-F9.

[the incredibly fiddly keyframe editing interface,]

Truly a work in progress!

[ and the lack of OMF import support are near the top - but other than that having a very good experience.]

Noted! IMHO, they should acquire Automatic Duck.

Hi Loren,

Great article and very balanced.
I agree with you when you said "all serious editors should be familiar with it".

I'm curious to konw about which workflows you prefer FCP and when you prefer Avid

Greetings

Hi, Ruben -

If it's offlined in Avid and a Media Composer or Symphony are nearby, that's a logical route. At one time I would counsel finishing on Avid, using Automatic Duck or other strategy. Today, I counsel finishing on FCP if you started on FCP, even if you must travel to an online workstation-- it's worth it.

In my fantasy, I imagined you choice is for a kind of production documentary or fiction, short term or long term but I see that is more for opportunity, what tell us that both are even.

Thanks

I just have to say this has been the most helpful document I have found in my personal transition. I use Avid at work and FCP at home, and this is always a click away when i run into those fun little moments when I am screaming "why won't you do what I want". Thanks so much for putting this out.

Hi,
Im stuggling to find reliable figures for FCP penetration in London and LA. Its hard to pin down a breakdown of numbers by production type (Promos, trailers, TV programmes) so perhaps a comparison of dry hire suites would be instructive?

On your home page you site an aprox 50% but do not specify the domain. Can you tell me more about this figure and how it is calculated?

"Today, FCP enjoys roughly 50% market penetration across most domains, from broadcast to Hollywood to educational"

Thanks!

Hi, John -

It's fuzzy. Empirical evidence and wisdom passed down to me from educational venues and buyers. From friends in production houses here and there who have either added to their Avid stations or swapped them out. From industry writers and pundits who actually do such surveys, which I read and forget to attribute. But you're quite right to query.

FCP scales easily and thus is now used in both independent and studio features, in TV series for network and cable, both dramatic and documentary, and is already extremely popular in the corporate/educational market where it first gained foothold.

An evidentiary tidbit I can share: ABC Television in southern California is outfitting about 5 dozen FCP stations-- based on the number of FCP KeyGuides ordered with their logo on each, through their systems integrator.

If they wanted Avid MC 3.0 KeyGuides, they could have had them. So it goes...

I wanted to add a special note following communication with Bob Russo, who works at Avid. He points out that while FCP now supports the AVC-Intra codec, a very high end Panasonic HD codec, you're required to transcode it to ProRes422 to be useful in FCP, and that I shouldn't describe this as "neck a neck with Avid" as Avid currently supports the codec natively-- or at least, without an extra step.

I acknowledge the correction.
