- output to sequence time
- timecode playback during output to tape and capture
- audio levels “live” during capture
- ALL the damn presets on one friggin page, that are associated with projects
- leave deck in pause while changing output settings
- don’t discard an entire digitized clip if the last second accidentally is logged too close to the end of recorded video.
- single keystroke for deselect-all tracks, larger track light buttons
- auto-patch for stereo track
- ability to snap to edit point with having to toggle on snapping [such as Avid’s cmd + drag/cmd/opt + drag]
- consistent ability to scroll-wheel value changes over ALL definable functions [such as center point], not just scaling and sound attributes, for example.
- improve the effects interface — too small, clumsy navigation
- create keyframeable bezier mask

Oh boy, don;t I wish I had read what the site was about and cruised the whole site before posting comments. Anyway, I use both and I like them both. Since I am going freelance, FCP is more attractive so I spend more time on it. But I am afraid to rust my Avid skills so I will do the next project on Avid…
I still thinks that in a couple of versions, FCP will really close the gap on Avid and I can’t wait to see Avid’s reaction. On top of that Premiere comes back to the mac, hurray…

the trim tools are very sub par compared to Avid but the thing I miss the most, and I feel is a real problem with FCP is you can not see the time code from the deck when digitizing and laying off to tape

That makes sense, and its bad it doesn’t do it now, so after i got burned by losing my favorites
when i had to trash my preferences, i got into the habit of copying my favorites folder to my current project browser, and just using that. when i want to hot key a favorite, i drag it to the effects favorites folder, but i always keep, a copy in my project favorites folder

one more thing:

be different, and track media based on parts of a clip that were used or not used in a sequence, as opposed to what clips ie
if i have three takes of a shot in one clip, and i used the third one, show me the first and second when i look for unused media. right now fcp counts the whole clip as used.
call it footage management as opposed to media management.

Wow. A lot of big wishes here, but also a lot of little things and I agree with just about all of it. Some that I didn’t even realize I wished for until I saw them here! I hope Apple’s paying attention

The biggest differing factors for me in general are color correction and media management. With Color in Final Cut Studio 2, I think my need is answered there. Final Cut Server has great possibilities.

The markers thing is a big one that seems so simple. I love that markers are subclips, but just about every app out there that offers markers also has a consolidated window for managing and navigating them. Bonus points for optional thumbnails. I wish for this in FCP daily. Goes double for DVDSP.

The only other ‘big’ feature is script-based editing. This is a unique Avid capability AFAIK and it’s really cool.

I think the “holy grail” would be to create in FCP the ability to import Avid bins, sequences, master clips & column info.
If this “translator” was developed I’m sure the migration to FCP would be huge.
I suspect due to patents this would never happen.

That may be a tough one. Script-based editing originated with Cinedco in the Ediflex NLE. It was called “script mimic”. I believe Avid bought up what was left of Cinedco years ago and owns this IP. The only way might be some 3rd party workaround using XML. Or to have Apple license the IP from Avid (unlikely).

The ability to split a single timeline and see the end of a sequence while working in the middle of a sequence (a-la most any text editor) so I can trim the middle of a show to match the marker for the required time, which is 45 minutes later in the show.

This list doesn’t seem to be updated since FCS2 came out. Things like Motion Tracking and Surround Sound Mixing are just a couple of the things I know the new version addresses. Could someone update this list?

New features in Motion and Soundtrack Pro not FCP. SmoothCam in FCP is stabilisation rather than motion tracking one object to match another (which is possible in Motion).

1) Graphical interface for AU plugins, like Logic 8 and Soundtrack Pro

2) Change Video (and Audio) out via a simple selection, rather than visiting the View menu and scrolling all the way down to the bottom of the list each time

3) Alphabetizing the Show Column right-click list in the Browser

4) And as mentioned elsewhere on this page, TIMELINE SCROLLING PLAYHEAD!!!!!

A real ‘Cut’ and ‘Lift’ command separate from the Delete key. So you do not have to deselect all just to make and edit.

Because of the way it is there is a necessary extra keystroke needed way too often.

Very nuts and bolts editing feature.

Do not expand or contract the time line when you change the speed of a clip via Command-J. Just change the speed of the clip in place. Let me trim the timeline if I want to.

I’ would like to see an audio scroll like avid’s (high pitch tape sound).

The choppyness of audio scroll in FCP gives me a stressy feel of sytem-crash (like my old PC (reason to swith to mac).
