problems customizing keyboard -basic stuff

Hello all,

Wading into Final Cut after 12 years of Avid editing. Just started working through "Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors."

Trying to customize keyboard to match what I do in the Avid. On my Avid keyboard, I put lift on the "z" and extract on the "x". On FCP, I put delete on the z and ripple delete on the x. Several problems.

I can't utilize the delete function on the keyboard at all (it doesn't matter where I put it) unless I use the actual delete button above the return button or go to the menu. I just bought FCP 7. Shouldn't I be able to map this function?

When I try to ripple delete with only Audio or Video selected, it doesn't ripple delete, it only deletes the clip or the section of the clip I want. It only ripple deletes when I select BOTH audio and video tracks. In the Avid, I don't need to select all the tracks as long as I maintain sync lock, but this must be the case with FCP?

Thank you for your responses,

Manny

So you mapped RIPPLE DELETE to X, and it doesn't work? Are you sure you didn't map it to SHIFT X or something? Because I have the exact same layout (those keys are way too much of a habit for me) and it works fine.

And for FCP to Ripple delete, it needs all AUTOSELECT buttons chosen for that...sorry. That is how it maintains sync. Picture those as both Sync Locks and layer select. yeah... that makes things a tad difficult.

Alright, so I have to click on all AUTOSELECT buttons to ripple delete on a sequence. Any shortcuts to SELECT ALL tracks besides manually clicking on each box?

DELETE doesn't work at all on my keyboard when I map it to a new location (I want to map it to the letter z). It works when I use the delete button above the return button or use to the menu. I checked the keyboard layout and my shift keyboard shortcuts are working fine.

I'm using FCP 7.0.1. Is this a bug? Do I need a special keyboard? Is there a setting on the timeline that I'm missing?

Thanks for all your help.

Hmmm...maybe trash your preferences? When stuff doesn't work like it should, that is the best thing to do. Get the PREFERENCES MANAGER from www.digitalrebellion.com and use that.

This isn't a bug, I am using FCP 7 and it works find.

And there is no shortcut to the autoselects. I leave them on all the time...But I tended to do that with the SYNC LOCKS in Avid.

You can option-click on one auto select button to turn all the others off, then click again to turn all on. So, option-double click any auto select button to arm them all.

Command-0 (on numeric keypad) toggles all the video track autoselects on/off
Option-0 (again on numeric keypad) toggles all the audio track autoselects on/off
Command-(number on numeric keypad) toggles each individual video track on/off
Option-(number on numeric keypad) toggles each individual audio track on/off
