Duplicate fields? Deinterlace?

Drop what on a clip in Avid. What is the name of the plugin?

Do you mean the Duplicate Fields setting in Avid's slomo dialogue? If so, I don't think there's a way to do that in FCP.

Hello,

I would use 'duplicate fields' when cutting sports promos. It is in the section with "100% reverse speed" and a few other which I can't remember as I haven't used Avid for a number of months. Sorry I can't be more accurate.

Am I being a bit thick and is it the same as 'De-interlace'?

Yes Deinterlace is the filter you want. Actually much better than Duplicate Fields because it interpolates the field that is kept rather than just duplicating the pixels.

Andrew,

The Duplicate Fields function is part of Avid's earliest slomo routines. It throws out 1 of the 2 interlaced fields and simply doubles the other one. In effect you are dropping the resolution by 50%. This is generally fine for most slomos. (As an aside - if you cut on Avid you really ought to be using one of the FluidMotion options for the best results.)

Because of what this function is doing, you are deinterlacing by default, but it really was never intended by Avid to be used to deinterlace. In the FCP world, there are specific deinterlace filters. Both included and 3rd party. Nattress effects (3rd party) includes a set of the more popular and high-quality, intelligent deinterlacing filters.

Cheers,
Oliver
